2011 Legislative Session Begins

To the editor:

On January 4, the 2011 Legislative Session began and I was sworn into office. I pledge to always work hard, be responsive to your concerns, and reach across the aisle to get things done for the good of our state. I’m excited to begin my service in the Minnesota Senate and am honored with the trust you have bestowed upon me.

I am assigned to serve on the Finance Committee, Judiciary and Public Safety Committee, and State Government Innovations and Veterans Committee. I’m very pleased with my committee assignments, as they will provide me the opportunity to work on some of the most pressing issues facing our state. I’m very interested in finding ways to make our government function in a more streamlined and efficient manner, make our communities safer, and get the state’s budget back on track.

The new legislature and governor have inherited a $7.2 billion state budget deficit, when inflation is included, for the upcoming two-year budget cycle. Moving forward, we must address this budget deficit in a responsible manner and set our state on a path for long-term economic success. We need to create good-paying jobs in our communities and keep our commitment to the things that will help our state grow economically, like a quality education for our kids and affordable college tuition for future workers.

I will be an advocate for the 95 percent of Minnesota’s working families that have seen their taxes increase under the Pawlenty administration. Only the richest 5 percent of Minnesotans now pay less in taxes than they did eight years ago. We need to stop the squeeze on Minnesota’s middle-class families, who have experienced drastic increases in property taxes and government fees over the past eight years. This budget must be balanced fairly and in a way that will allow families and our state to prosper.

Watch for my upcoming survey and notice of town hall meetings. I want to hear from you. You may call my Capitol Office at (651) 296-4334 or email me at sen.barb.goodwin@senate.mn.
