Sheran’s Highway 14 Bill Heard in Transportation Committee

On Tuesday, the Senate Transportation Committee will debate a bill by Senator Kathy Sheran to help complete U.S. Highway 14.
The bill, Senate File 135, authorizes the creation of new special license plate supporting the four-lane expansion of Highway 14. This bill would allow Minnesota drivers the opportunity to pay a one-time, $30 donation, to receive a special license plate that reads “Support Highway 14.” A Highway 14 account would be created whereby any donation for issuance of the plate, or other donations, would be used for construction or reconstruction of the four-lane expansion of Highway 14. Although it is difficult to estimate how much these plates would raise, some specialty plates have raised hundreds of thousands, to tens of millions of dollars.
U.S. Highway 14 stretches across the width of Minnesota, through New Ulm, Mankato, Waseca, Owatonna and Rochester. Revenue raised from these plates would help pay for the four-lane expansion between New Ulm and North Mankato, and Owatonna and Dodge Center.
“Completing Highway 14 is a matter of public safety, and economic development. The Highway connects regional centers, universities, hospitals and major employers in southern Minnesota. The road is heavily traveled, and dangerous,” Senator Sheran stated.
Citing the fatality rates along the New Ulm to North Mankato segment (from 2007-2009) were 96% above the statewide average Senator Sheran emphasized the importance of this project.
“I introduced this bill because we need to explore all revenue resources available to us in order to make this road safe. This bill will also allow my constituents the opportunity to voice their support for Highway 14, and permit those who want to participate in this process a chance to pledge their support and help move the project forward,” said Sheran.
