Sen. David Tomassoni Participates in Capitol Internship Program

The Minnesota Senate Capitol Internship Program for persons with disabilities is well underway. Local State Senator David Tomassoni (DFL-Chisholm) has taken part in the program since its inception. “This is a great program that allows persons with disabilities to get a first-hand look at the legislature and an opportunity to work with Senators and staff at the capitol,” Sen. Tomassoni said. “My intern is Julius Williams from Andover, he has been a great addition to our office.”

Senator Tomassoni added that the program mentors participants on future careers and it provides recognition to those in the disability community that have demonstrated commitment to work and exemplary job performance.

Selected participants work one day a week at the State Capitol during the 2011 legislative session. Each intern is assigned to a Senator and their office, where the intern works on prepared projects, attend senate meetings of interest and participate in group projects with other interns.

The interns are mentored by co-workers at the Senate and the hosting Senator. This program allows people with disabilities to be recognized for their contributions to the state’s workforce and communicates the capabilities of people with disabilities.

“I encourage business and communities to consider hiring a person with disabilities,” Sen. Tomassoni said. “My intern from last year testified a few weeks ago in committee on behalf of people with disabilities – The Senate Capitol Internship Program is a rewarding program and I am proud to be a part of it.”

The program started February 24 and runs until April 28. For more information go to the MN Works! Website: www.mnworks4you.org
