Job Opportunities: Higher Education
Abigail Adams once said, “Learning is not attained by chance, it must be sought for with ardor and attended to with diligence.” These are inspiring words for people looking to train or retrain for a career by pursuing higher education. Whether it is community college, a state university, the University of Minnesota, a vocational school, military service training, online training or a private college, there are many opportunities.
With all of these options, it is understandable that some prospective students can become overwhelmed, but the process does not have to be stressful. The Minnesota Office of Higher Education (OHE) offers a “Get Ready for College” website (getreadyforcollege.org) that provides information for college preparation, school selection and financial aid.
To help prepare for college, the web site provides information on what classes to take, how to earn college credits while in high school, and tips on saving for college. Their site even offers a link for sixth to eight graders thinking about higher education.
Get Ready for College also provides help in selecting from the 200 public and private post-secondary institutions in Minnesota. Whether you have a career in mind or are still working on narrowing your choices down, their website offers help.
With State, Child Care, Federal Pell, Minnesota GI, SMART and TEACH grants, figuring out what options you have to help pay for school can be as confusing as picking a major. With the OHE website, you have all the tools you need to find needed resources. If you are thinking about going to college but don’t know if it is for you or if you can afford it, I suggest you check out this web site.
Those that have served in the military should check out the website’s “Military Service Education Benefits” section. From recognition of the courses that were a part of military training to financial aid, the site should offer everything you need.
There are great opportunities out there and many of them are right in our backyard. Century College, located in White Bear Lake, is a great college that serves our community well. The college’s roles include transfer preparation, occupational preparation, business and industry training, continuing education, and personal enrichment. Visit their website at www.century.edu to find more information.
I would like to acknowledge those that have finished school and are still searching for a job. With the current economy, finding a job can be a long and stressful process, but by utilizing the right tools, finding a career can be made easier. There are many programs throughout the state that offer useful services for those looking for a new job. Among them are the ISEEK program (iseek.org) and Minnesota Works (minnesotaworks.net). Try to stay motivated and remain positive.
