Back to School
Students, parents, teachers, school staff and coaches are preparing for another eventful school year. As they get ready to kick off the year, I wish them great success and thank them for their efforts. As former President James A. Garfield said, “Next in importance to freedom and justice is popular education, without which neither freedom nor justice can be permanently maintained.”
Now is a good time to think about visiting and volunteering at a local school. Getting involved in school activities is a great way for parents to provide support and encouragement for their students. There are many ways to support teachers, staff and coaches. I encourage you to contact a local school or visit the school district website to find out more about volunteer opportunities, upcoming events and other back to school information.

Another important task to complete before school starts is making sure your child has the immunizations he or she needs and make sure your school has the needed information. The Minnesota Required Childhood Immunization Schedule can be found at, http://www.health.state.mn.us/divs/idepc/immunize/schedules.html. You can also find the site by searching for “Minnesota Required Childhood Immunization Schedule.” For more information, call your doctor, clinic or health plan. If you do not have insurance, or your insurance does not cover these immunizations, contact Ramsey County Public Health at 651-266-1234 or Washington County Public Health at 651-430-6655.
For those thinking about starting or going back to school, or are looking for a career change, I encourage you to check out Minnesota State Colleges and Universities at http://www.mnscu.edu/ to see if there is a program or degree that sparks your interest. Century College, located in White Bear Lake, is a great local option right in your back yard. Find out more about Century College at http://www.century.edu/. Education beyond high school can bring many social and economic benefits. Remember that it is never too late to learn!
Whether you have an elementary, middle school, or high school student, or if you are attending college or returning to school, there are some back-to-school study tips and guides that are useful for any age. Many resources are available on the internet. One website, http://www.studygs.net/, includes information on:
• Time management
• Problem solving & decision making
• Classroom participation
• Preparing for tests
• Writing research papers
Finally, I thank the teachers, administrators and staff at our public and private schools for the work they are doing. In order to offer a quality education, you need to have quality workers in these positions, and we are blessed to have great talent throughout our education system.
