Veterans Day Observation

This weekend we will be honoring our veterans. I encourage you to reflect on the following quote this Veterans Day: “Freedom has its life in the hearts, the actions, the spirit of men and so it must be daily earned and refreshed – else like a flower cut from its life-giving roots, it will wither and die” ~President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

As President Eisenhower points out, freedom is not free and it is definitely something we should not take for granted. American bravery is demonstrated daily all across the globe and we should be doing what we can to support our troops and their families.

There are many ways to show your support:

The Minnesota VFW, Minnesota American Legion and their respective Auxiliaries encourage everyone to support veterans and the families of the troops. Visit their websites to find ways you can help (http://www.vfw.state.mn.us/ (VFW) and http://www.mnlegion.org/ (American Legion).
Beyond the Yellow Ribbon: The Minnesota National Guard has pioneered a program in hopes of changing how soldiers are reintegrated back to their communities. Called “Beyond the Yellow Ribbon”, the program is named as a reminder that the support of soldiers cannot end when they return from deployment and the yellow ribbons are untied. Many of our area communities and businesses now participate in this program. Go to the Minnesota National Guard’s Beyond the Yellow Ribbon website for more information, http://www.minnesotanationalguard.org/btyr/
Another way to show our veterans your appreciation is by attending a Veterans Day event. One example is the White Bear Lake Veterans’ Day Observance. The observance will take place on Sunday (Nov. 11) at 2pm at the St. John in the Wilderness Cemetery. The service will include music, a three rifle volley and guest speaker Kevin Blake (retired US Navy Seal).

The North Saint Paul, Maplewood Oakdale school district is showing their support by hosting a Veterans Day event at 10 am on Nov. 12. The event includes a presentation of colors by the VFW Post 1350, singing by the choir, and coffee and cookies.

The MN Department of Veterans Affairs official state Veterans Day Program will be held on Nov. 11 at the Veterans Memorial Community Center in Inver Grove Heights. The event will start with a free community breakfast from 8:30-9:30 a.m. followed by the program at 10:00 a.m.

I also encourage you to visit me at the Capitol, or let me know if you’d like me to stop by your home or apartment. Also, please tune in to my local cable TV show, “Your Capitol: What’s Up?,” which appears on public access channels 15 and 16.
