Jobs bill with key provisions from Senator Saxhaug heads to Governor Dayton’s desk
ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Minnesota Senate approved a conference committee report on the Omnibus Jobs and Economic Development bill, sending the bill to Governor Dayton to be signed. Senator Tom Saxhaug (DFL – Grand Rapids) played an important role in the development of the bill, securing a number of crucial provisions for Northern Minnesota. Among them were funding for projects at the Grand Rapids YMCA, the Greenway Ice Arena as well as for a shared fire hall for the Coleraine, Bovey, Taconite, Marble, Calumet and Greenway fire departments.
“We are creating economic development in many different communities throughout Northern Minnesota.” said Senator Saxhaug. “These are investments that will help keep our neighborhoods healthy and safe.”
Another key element of the legislation Senator Saxhaug included is for Minnesota Diversified Industries (MDI). MDI serves people with disabilities by offering progressive development and employment opportunities.
“It is important we put money into programs that turn around and invest in people and in jobs. MDI does just this. They provide a valuable service to the community and help individuals gain skills and confidence.”
Senator Saxhaug also fought to increase funding for Explore Minnesota. The legislation approximately doubles the funding for the promotional and tourism advocacy organization statewide.
“From the Guthrie and the Mall of America to the lakes and forests in Northern Minnesota, tourism is important for our entire state. People from all across the country come to use our facilities and enjoy our beautiful environment. In turn, they help our economy by bringing out-of-state dollars to Minnesota.”
