MnDOT scraps U.S. Hwy 53 western route option; Sen. Tomassoni gives nod of approval
ST.PAUL, Minn — Since it was originally proposed, Senator David Tomassoni (DFL-Chisholm) has opposed the western route option in the Highway 53 relocation between Virginia and Eveleth. MnDOT’s decision to drop the option due to its high community, economic and environmental impacts comes as a welcome decision.
“The westerly route was a non-starter from the beginning because of the severe impact it would have on businesses, schools and emergency services in the quad cities,” Senator Tomassoni said. “I’m glad MnDOT and Commissioner Zelle have taken the option off the table, and I would like to thank the thousands of people who have actively participated in this process.”
MnDOT is still considering three other possible routes. The state has to relocate the roadway by May 2017 because Cliffs Natural Resources has rights to mine minerals currently located under the roadway.
