Metropolitan State University to Present Bonding Request to #BuildMN Tour

ST. PAUL, MINN. – Metropolitan State University will make its bonding pitch at one of several stops throughout a day-long #BuildMN tour to be held in St. Paul next week. Senator Foung Hawj (DFL-St. Paul) will be joining members of the Senate Capital Investment Committee as they hear from local bonding projects on Tuesday, November 12.

Metro State is requesting $35.86 million in bonding funds to help build a Science Education Center, a learning space the school says it is currently lacking. School leaders say it’s the only system university to have no dedicated science building. The campus’s rapidly growing Nursing and Health Science programs not only desperately need more space, they need more advanced science laboratories in order to give students research experience before they graduate.

A new science building will also help the university advance Minnesota’s goal of increasing graduates in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) fields. The school’s enrollment has been steadily increasing, and a new science building will allow Metro State to add five more science degrees along with a Professional Science Master’s degree in Ecology and Environmental Science.

“Metro State’s bonding request directly responds to one of the highest state and MnSCU priorities; to increase the number of STEM fields, particularly urban science teachers and Bachelor of Science graduates. A vast majority of the degrees given out each year are to metro-area students and following graduation 79% of the school’s grads stay in the metropolitan area and serve their communities. Investing in Metro State’s Science Education Center means staying competitive and increasing our regional vitality,” Senator Hawj said.

The Capital Investment Committee will be hearing from Metro State at 6:00 pm at Saint Paul College. Among other stops the #BuildMN tour will also visit the Palace Theatre, Twin Cities Public Television, and the Children’s Museum.
