Minnesota Senate Bonding Tour comes to the U of M

MINNEAPOLIS – The Senate Capital Investment Committee will be coming to the Twin Cities metro to tour projects and hear presentations on what to include on the 2014 Capital Investment Bill (the bonding bill). The #BuildMN tour is in its fourth week, and will be in the metro on Tuesday, November 12 and Wednesday, November 13.

Local governments, agencies and other groups have all made requests to fund various projects through the 2014 bonding bill. The #BuildMN tour gives these different groups the opportunity to present directly to lawmakers involved in the decision-making process.

State Senator Kari Dziedzic (DFL – Minneapolis) represents the University area and believes the bonding bill is a critical way of investing in projects that will bring long-term gain for Minnesota.

“Every project that is selected for the final bill will meet certain criteria; being in the public interest, supporting jobs, driving regional economies and providing long-term benefits,” said Sen. Dziedzic. “Projects like those at the University of Minnesota benefit MN students, the surrounding community and provide a ripple effect of benefits across the state.”

The tour will visit the U of M, tomorrow, Wednesday, November 13. The tour will include stops at Northrup Auditorium, the Tate Physics Laboratory, and the Mechanical Engineering Building. In total, the University of Minnesota system is requesting over $230 million, $100 million of which would go to preserving and maintaining buildings.

“Preserving and updating Higher Education facilities is a key component to a 21st century Higher Education system that is effective and efficient at educating Minnesotans,” said Sen. Dziedzic.

In total, over $2.8 billion worth of bonding requests have been made, and the committee will be trying to craft a final bonding bill of approximately $1 billion. With the short length of the 2014 session, bonding will be the main focus of lawmakers.
