Three Highway 14 projects included in highway improvement program

Senator Kathy Sheran (DFL-Mankato), a long-standing advocate for improvements on Highway 14, received good news today as Governor Dayton’s office announced the projects to be included in the Corridors of Commerce Program funding. Of the ten projects announced today, three will go towards improving Highway 14.

“Our communities have been waiting a long time for these improvements,” said Sen. Sheran. “Businesses and families depend on these highways and we have been neglecting Highway 14 for far too long. This funding will be used to safely connect businesses and families across the region.”

The funding for the highway projects was made available during the 2013 Legislative Session when the Legislature passed and created the Corridors of Commerce program. The Program authorizes $300 million in trunk highway fund bonds for work on the state’s trunk highways. Project selection was done in consultation with the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) central office, the governor and local district offices. Funds for the projects will begin to be available July 1, 2014.

“This investment would not have been possible without the creation of the Corridors of Commerce Program,” said Sen. Sheran. “I believe this program will be a useful tool for businesses and communities and I am pleased to see it start in southern Minnesota.”

The three Highway 14 projects include the four-lane expansion from North Mankato to Nicollet, the Nicollet four-lane bypass along the Highway 14 corridor and phase one of the four-lane expansion from Owatonna to Dodge Center. These projects will be significant in increasing safety and mobility along the corridor.
