Senator Jim Carlson elected Chair of the Legislative Commission on Metropolitan Government
ST. PAUL, MINN –On Wednesday, November 20 State Senator Jim Carlson (DFL-Eagan) was elected chair of the Legislative Commission on Metropolitan Government. The Commission oversees the Metropolitan Council operating and capital budgets, work program, and capital improvement program.
The Metropolitan Council is the 17 member regional governmental agency and metropolitan planning organization that maintains public services and oversees the growth of the 7 county metro area (Anoka, Carver, Dakota, Hennepin, Ramsey, Scott and Washington).
The Legislative Commission on Metropolitan Government is a bipartisan, geographically balanced body of 14 legislators who reside in or represent a portion of the seven-county metropolitan area. The Commission is appointed to monitor, review, and make recommendations to the Metropolitan Council and to the legislature for the following calendar year on the Met Council’s tax levies, any proposed increases in debt for the council, the role of the council and the implementation of the council’s plans.
Senator Carlson released the following statement on his election:
“I am honored to have been elected chair of this crucial position. I have first-hand experience in the Met Council’s role in providing stewardship of the metro area, as a member of the Transportation and Public Safety Committee and through my commitment to the issues that face our suburbs and urban centers. To continue to support a thriving metropolitan area, we must make sure the Council is doing what it needs to do, and as Chair of the Legislative Commission on Metropolitan Government, I look forward to providing the necessary oversight of the Met Council.”
