Senate Bonding Committee visits Albert Lea

Senator Dan Sparks along with his colleagues that serve on the Minnesota State Senate Capital Investment Committee have been spending the interim crisscrossing the state to get a firsthand look at bonding requests. After visits to Northwest, Southwest, Northeast and the Metro, this week it was Southeast Minnesota’s turn to highlight their local projects.

“It was great to be close to home and have the opportunity to show off everything southern Minnesota has to offer,” said Sen. Sparks. “Today we looked at the Fountain Lake, Blazing Star Trail and Cedar River Watershed District projects. These projects are very important to our community and the region.”

The Fountain Lake Restoration Project will improve water quality, aquatic habitat and recreation opportunities. The proposed project will remove approximately one million cubic yards of accumulated sediment.

The Blazing Star Joint Powers is requesting funding for the development of the Blazing Star Pedestrian Trail. This trail will ultimately extend from Albert Lea to the western city limits of Austin and the Shooting Star Trail.

The City of Austin is looking to invest in flood damage reduction. Their proposed project will use a plan developed by the Cedar River Watershed District that focuses on small watershed target zones to reduce water flows. The goal is to protect farmland, reduce future infrastructure damage and improve habitat and recreational value in the area.

“I am very thankful for the committee stopping by today,” said Sen. Sparks. “It is important for the members to get a firsthand look at the projects to really highlight the needs for the region.”
