Senators Tour East Ridge High School

State Senator Susan Kent (DFL-Woodbury) was joined by the chairs of the Senate Education Committees Sen. Chuck Wiger (DFL – Maplewood) and Sen. Patricia Torres Ray (DFL – Minneapolis) for a tour of East Ridge High School Wednesday. The tour highlighted the school’s state-of-the-art technology and STEM curriculum, teaching approaches including blended learning and flipped classrooms, and their college and career readiness program “Project Lead the Way”. Senator Wiger is touring several schools this week to get a first-hand look at unique education programs.

“East Ridge High School exemplifies the innovative programs and policies that are found in South Washington County Schools,” said Sen. Kent. “The research-driven change to later start times has led to better test scores, and the implementation of Pre-K throughout the district has led to better kindergarten readiness. Data driven approaches are the key to education innovation in Minnesota. South Washington County’s bold approach in implementing these programs can be taken and applied across the state.”

In the 2013 Legislative Session, the legislature made great strides in investing once again in Minnesota’s schools, reversing a decade’s long trend of financial neglect. This session, legislators will look for ways to build on this progress.

“Minnesota’s future economy will require new approaches in preparing our children. The workforce of the future cannot rely on the education of the past. We can use data and research to guarantee every student gets the education they deserve. I’m looking forward to finding ways we can take South Washington County’s methods to the rest of Minnesota.” said Sen. Kent.
