Senator Melissa Wiklund given Award of Excellence
State Senator Melissa Wiklund (DFL – Bloomington) was given an Award of Excellence for her work to change the process for child care centers. The award was presented by the Minnesota Association for the Education of Young Children (MnAEYC) and the Minnesota School-Age Care Alliance (MnSACA).
“I am honored to receive this award, and am pleased we were able to make these changes in 2013,” said Sen. Wiklund. “This will modernize the accrediting process and allow us to expand recognition of high quality care with higher reimbursement rates.”
The accreditation process will now select day care providers based on a standards based process. Previously accrediting organizations were listed specifically in statute which limited the ability to recognize other high-quality accreditors. By moving to a merit based system that lists accreditors annually, parents can have up to date choices in their child care options giving parents more access to high quality child care options.
“A lot of groups collaborated to put together this legislation and we have made smart decisions that will benefit kids, parents and childcare providers. I am proud to have authored this legislation in the Senate,” added Sen. Wiklund.
