Sen. Reinert and Rep. Loon Announce Package of Sunday Liquor Law Repeal Options

ST. PAUL, MINN. – As momentum grows for a repeal of Minnesota’s antiquated ‘blue laws’ – Senator Roger Reinert (DFL-Duluth) and Representative Jenifer Loon (R-Eden Prairie) have teamed up to offer a package of legislative options that would allow for reform of the state’s ban on Sunday liquor sales. The lawmakers announced the seven options at a press conference Thursday morning.

“This year is different. It’s 2014, and it’s the ‘Unsession.’ Momentum is surging for some form of repeal of the Sunday sales ban, and for the first time we’re offering a variety of options from which legislators can choose. It’s time to move our laws in the 21st Century. Allow businesses to be open if they want to be open, and allow customers to make a purchase if they want to make a purchase. It works in 38 other states – including every state that borders Minnesota,” said Sen. Reinert.

Rep. Loon is the author of legislation that would permit local cities to decide if off-sale liquor can be sold on Sundays. She says a repeal would promote local control, consumer choice, and economic freedom.

“The sale of liquor on Sundays is a decision I believe should be made closer to the people—not at the state level. Some communities, especially on the border, may find a repeal beneficial, others may not see the need,” Rep. Loon said. “Since Minnesota is one of only 12 states that ban Sunday liquor sales, we need to consider our options to stay competitive and promote consumer convenience.”

The full spectrum of repeal options include allowing municipalities to choose whether or not to keep the ban in place, allowing for the sale of growlers on Sundays, allowing tap rooms to sell alcohol on Sundays or introducing a constitutional amendment to the 2014 ballot.
