Large Multilingual Turnout for Senator Hawj’s First Town Hall Meeting

ST. PAUL, MINN. – More than 100 of Sen. Foung Hawj’s (DFL-St. Paul) constituents filled the Conway Community Rec. Center last Friday, March 14 for the Senator’s first town hall meeting. The multi-lingual constituents asked questions in four different languages. Sen. Hawj’s office arranged for both Somali and Spanish translators to be available, while he answered questions in both English and Hmong.

“It was a very informative meeting, and I really appreciate being represented by someone who understands our community and can communicate in the language that many of us use every day; it’s a refreshing feeling,” said constituent Chai Vue.

The meeting was held jointly with Rep. Sheldon Johnson (DFL-St. Paul) and Rep. Tim Mahoney (DFL-St. Paul). The well-attended town hall touched on a number of topics ranging broadly from transportation, to education, snow plowing and minimum wage.

“I’d like to thank my East St. Paul constituents for showing up and asking questions. It’s important to get involved in politics and let your legislators know if there are problems in the community – that’s how things get fixed. I look forward to holding more great meetings in the future,” said Sen. Hawj.

Sen. Hawj also fielded questions on bike trails that run through East St. Paul, along with property tax refund questions, health insurance and how to help kids find and keep jobs. Sen. Hawj wanted to extend his thanks not only to those who attended, but also to the Conway Community Rec. Center and the Sanneh Foundation for contributing the space.
