Cesar Chavez Day in Minnesota

ST. PAUL, MINN. – State Senator Patricia Torres Ray’s (DFL-Minneapolis) bill to designate March 31 as Cesar Chavez Day moved forward today. The bill passed through the State and Local Government Committee onto the Senate floor. If passed off the floor, Minnesota will become the 12th state to recognize Cesar Chavez’s birthday as a state holiday.

Sen. Torres Ray highlighted Chavez’s legacy when she presented the bill.

“By designating the March 31 as Cesar Chavez day we are honoring the legacy of a great leader who fought economic injustice and helped guarantee human rights for migrant workers. His dedication to building a movement is an inspiration to how grassroots efforts can change the world,” said Sen. Torres Ray.

Cesar Chavez was a prominent Mexican-American labor, human and civil rights leader who lead a nonviolent movement to fight economic injustice affecting farm-workers. His movement achieved unprecedented gains for workers and earned him a posthumous Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1994. President Obama has endorsed March 31 of each year as Cesar Chavez Day and has asked Americans to observe the day with service, community and educational programs to honor Cesar Chavez’s enduring legacy.

“I hope that every Minnesotan can look to Cesar Chavez and be inspired to go out into their own neighborhoods, build their communities and create positive, powerful change for the betterment of everyone,” said Sen. Torres Ray. “While we have made much progress since his time, we must always continue to strive to do better.”
