Is Minnesota Reading Corps is Worth the Investment?
Students in the Minnesota Reading Corps are outperforming their peers. A recent evaluation found that kids who participate in Reading Corps performed well above the state average 3rd grade reading test scores.
Because the program has a proven record of preparing students to meet third grade reading standards, it eliminates the need to spend additional resources for intervention programs down the road.
We introduced a bill this session to provide an additional $2 million to help the Reading Corps deploy an additional 90 members and serve 2,700 more students. A total of 30,300 Minnesota students could benefit as soon as next year.
I don’t think there is a better investment in education that we as a state could make. Between substantial cost savings and higher literacy assessment scores, we know that Reading Corps has a significant impact on our kids and our state. We’d be doing our kids and schools a disservice by not investing in education and literacy.
