Sen. Hoffman on Minnesota Having the 2nd Lowest Number of Uninsured in the Country

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Following the announcement that the state’s uninsured rate had fallen an impressive 40 percent since MNsure enrollment began on September 30 last year, state legislators, health care advocates and others have been applauding the news. The report, released this week by the University of Minnesota State Health Access Data Assistance Center (SHADAC) shows that now 95 percent of all Minnesotans currently have health care insurance.

“This announcement is a clear indication that MNsure is working, and that means the most Minnesotans in state history now have the benefits of health care coverage. On top of these wonderful numbers for our state – we currently rank 2nd in the nation behind only Massachusetts’s in getting our state residents coverage.” Said Sen. John Hoffman (DFL-Champlin, Brooklyn Park and Coon Rapids) He added, “There is still work to do to better the system, though this is progress all Minnesotans can be proud of.”

Between September 30, 2013 and May 1, 2014, the number of uninsured Minnesotans fell by 180,500 – a reduction of 40.6 percent. That translates to a starting percentage of 8.2 percent uninsured prior to the implementation of MNsure, to the current uninsured rate of just 4.9 percent. The majority of this increase in insured Minnesotans is due to enrollment in state insurance programs like Medical Assistance and MinnesotaCare.

“More insured Minnesotans directly translates to better health care and fewer costs for all. Minnesota is already one of the healthiest states in the nation, these numbers show our state won’t rest until we all have the benefits of affordable health care,” said Sen. Hoffman.
