Meet State Senator Greg Clausen
Senator Greg Clausen was elected in 2012 and is serving his first term in the Minnesota Senate.
Why did you decide to run for the state legislature?
I have spent my life serving others as a teacher, coach, and high school principal and central office administrator. Running for the state senate was a natural continuation of my public service and desire to make a difference in my community and state.
What personal or work experience most prepared you to serve in the legislature?
I have always considered myself to be a life-long learner and have found my life in the Senate to be a daily learning experience. I currently serve on the E-12 Education Policy, Higher Education and Workforce Development (Vice Chair) and Health and Human Services Committees. My education background and involvement as a community volunteer with affordable housing and homeless issues are well suited for my Senate work.
Do you have any previous experience working on education issues?
I have been an educator for over 40 years, working both in the classroom as a teacher and as a school administrator. Following a retirement of eight weeks, I returned to the education world, working to secure funding by writing and administering federal and state grants for the Rosemount-Apple Valley-Eagan Public Schools (District 196).
What school districts do you represent?
I represent School Districts 196 (Rosemount-Apple Valley-Eagan) and 192 (Farmington Public Schools).
What’s the latest book you’ve read, movie you’ve watched or favorite TV show?
“Destiny of the Republic: A Tale of Madness” by Candice Millard
“The FIVE Dysfunctions of a Team” by Patrick Lencioni
What is your favorite thing to do when you aren’t working at the legislature?
Spending time with my wife, three adult children, their spouses and three grandsons.
What is something that most people wouldn’t know about you?
My wife and I enjoy summer drives in our 1968 Oldsmobile Cutlass convertible.
