Sen. Sheran Appointed to the Governor’s Task Force on the Protection of Children
Senator Kathy Sheran (DFL-Mankato) was recently appointed to the Governor’s Task Force on the Protection of Children. The Task Force will be asked to make specific recommendations for comprehensive improvements to the child protection system in the upcoming 2015 Legislative Session.
“The recent death of Erik Dean exposed significant failure to provide protection by our child welfare system,” Sen. Sheran
said. “This task force has an important role of reviewing our policies for intervening in the life of a child. We need to review our attitudes about when and how government should intervene in situations that endanger their healthy development. I am glad to represent my district in this important discussion.”
In addition to state legislators, the Task Force will include county representatives, children’s advocates, child protection experts and attorneys – including Nicollet County Attorney Michelle Zehnder Fischer. The Task Force will be chaired jointly by Human Services Commissioner Lucinda Jesson and Ramsey County Commissioner Toni Carter.
“The best way to find positive results is to gather all of Minnesota’s child advocacy groups and have an open discussion about what is working and a real discussion about what isn’t,” said Sen. Sheran. “I am looking forward to working with this group and identifying needed changes to keep our children safe.”
The group will make recommendations in three areas – policies, laws and protocols; accountability within the system; and assuring that the state has the capacity and resources to fully address child maltreatment reports. Their preliminary recommendations will be given to the Governor and Legislature by Dec. 31, 2014.
