Housing Investment Huge Boost for Maplewood

ST. PAUL, MINN. – The Frost-English neighborhood in Maplewood is heading for a major facelift. An investment of $1.9 million from the Metropolitan Council will be put toward the $12.3 million 50-unit mixed-income development called the Villages at Frost-English. It’s one of the first steps in what the city plans will be a major redevelopment of the area.

“Affordable housing is a critical need in our region, and I’m so happy to see this project get funding. The Frost-English neighborhood has been in need of economic development for some time, and I believe this housing complex will be a sign of good things to come,” said Sen. Chuck Wiger (DFL-Maplewood).

Maplewood Mayor Nora Slawik had similar thoughts about the development. She says the investment is very big news for the city.

“The City of Maplewood is pleased to receive the grant from the Metropolitan Council to continue the renewal efforts in our Gladstone Neighborhood. Several of the properties have deteriorated and this project will allow us to begin our next phase of re-development. It is the City’s hope that this project will spur additional reinvestment in the neighborhood and other businesses will be interested in moving here as well,” said Mayor Slawik.

The Mayor added that 10 of the units will be dedicated to veterans. Additionally, those veteran-occupied units will be provided with services through Maplewood-based Solid Ground. To supplement the $1.9 million investment from the Metropolitan Council, the city is putting in $3.4 million and the project is also getting $7.5 million in tax equity credits awarded through the Minnesota Housing Finance Agency (MHFA).

According to developer Sherman Associates, the tax equity credits as well as other awarded funding were absolutely critical to moving forward with the project. Construction on the housing unit is set to begin next spring.
