10-month-old Chisholm Resident Inspires Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Week

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Thanks to the efforts of a Chisholm-area mother of two young girls, next week (Feb. 7-14) has been proclaimed “Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Week” by Gov. Mark Dayton. Kelly Lambert wrote to Sen. David Tomassoni’s (DFL-Chisholm) office last month sharing her 10-month-old daughter Jaci’s story of open heart surgery at the tiny age of just 4 months.

Lambert has joined forces with other parents and advocates on behalf of Heart Heroes, Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to providing superhero capes and other forms of encouragement and inspiration to kids and families affected by congenital heart defects (CHD). By issuing the proclamation, Minnesota is helping Heart Heroes reach its goal of having all states proclaim the week of Feb. 7-14 Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Week.

“Kelly and her daughter Jaci’s story has really helped open my eyes to this very common condition that affects one in every 100 babies. Kelly wanted to help raise awareness and I was happy to forward her request on to the Governor and help make this happen. With more research and awareness, hopefully we can find answers to this troubling heart defect so babies like Jaci won’t have to go through open heart surgery in the future,” said Sen. Tomassoni.

“Before Jaci was born with CHD, I didn’t know anything about this disease. Now I know that 36,000 babies are born with this defect every year. It means so much to me and my family that Sen. Tomassoni and Gov. Dayton helped make this proclamation happen, and I’d like to thank them for helping raise awareness in Minnesota,” said Kelly Lambert.
