Sgt. Joseph Bergeron Memorial Highway Bill Heard in Committee

ST. PAUL, MINN – On May 1, 2010 the Maplewood community lost Sgt. Joseph Bergeron, a veteran officer on the Maplewood Police Department for 26 years, a husband and father to two teenage girls. Sgt. Bergeron was shot and killed while responding to reports of a carjacking. In the years following this deadly shooting, the community has thanked Bergeron’s service with a memorial, and now Maplewood is hoping to name a section of Highway 36 in his honor.

Sen. Chuck Wiger (DFL-Maplewood) is chief authoring the bill to assign the section of Highway 36 that resides within Maplewood city limits to be called Sergeant Joseph Bergeron Memorial Highway. The bill received a hearing on Wednesday in the Senate Transportation and Public Safety Committee.

“It’s an honor to carry this bill for the City of Maplewood. Sgt. Bergeron bravely and dutifully served his community for 26 years, the naming of Highway 36 in his honor is a small gesture of gratitude to his family for Bergeron’s sacrifice,” said Sen. Wiger.

Sen. Susan Kent (DFL-Woodbury) is a co-author of the bill and also spoke at Wednesday’s hearing. “We come together with the greater Maplewood community today to honor Sgt. Joseph Bergeron and his family, who have had to deal with so much in his absence. Today is about remembering Bergeron for the life he led and for his sacrifice,” said Sen. Kent.

Bergeron’s widow Gail appeared at the hearing, as well as Maplewood Police Chief Paul Schnell, who spoke about the profound effects Sgt. Bergeron’s death had on the community and police force. He echoed Sen. Kent’s comments about the need to remember Bergeron and his sacrifice.
