Sen. Jensen Responds to Jennie-O Idling

SAINT PAUL, MN – As avian influenza continues to devastate Minnesota’s turkey producers, Jennie-O yesterday announced it will move to a single processing shift at its Faribault plant. This idling will lay off 233 workers beginning May 26. State Senator Vicki Jensen (DFL-Faribault) released the following statement in response:

“While we are working hard to find a way to stop the spread of this bird flu, its continued spread is having terrible effects for people across the state. Although we are doing what we can at the state level, we must find more ways we can offer aid and assistance to putting a stop to this epidemic.

This is devastating news to the 233 workers and their families, and it will be felt across the entire region and state. In times of crisis Minnesotans can come together and help each other. My office is available to assist the affected workers in any way possible. We need to do everything we can to get these employees back to work, which means bringing an end to the avian flu epidemic quickly.”

Impacted employees can call DEED’s Dislocated Worker Rapid Response toll-free number with questions at 866-213-1422 or online at .

The Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) is in the process of establishing informational meetings for impacted workers. All known impacted workers will receive notice of these meetings and are welcome to attend. There will be information on Unemployment Insurance and the Dislocated Worker program, and an opportunity to enroll in the Dislocated Worker program to receive customized services which may include job search assistance, counselor-approved training, and related support.
