SAINT PAUL, Minn. – In light of recent media attention regarding a number of high-profile security issues including the use of body cameras by police officers across the country, State Senator Susan Kent (DFL-Woodbury) is proud to announce she was recently named the Senate Chair of the Legislative Commission on Data Practices. The commission was established to study issues related to government data practices and individuals’ personal data privacy rights. Sen. Kent’s tempered views on many of these issues will serve the commission and the people of Minnesota well.

“It’s been a privilege to serve on this commission in 2014, in its inaugural year, and an honor to be named as the Senate Chair. I’m really looking forward to continuing our work into many of these issues people across this state and country are understandably concerned about. The issue of data privacy, including the use of data collected from police body cameras, is something I am committed to exploring and finding solutions that properly balance government accountability with citizen privacy,” said Sen. Kent.

Modern technology provides tremendous opportunities to increase government efficiencies, effectiveness, and accountability and transparency to the public. With this increased use of technology however, comes the obligation to ensure that citizens’ information and privacy is protected. Many of the issues the Commission will address have been discussed at the legislature in recent years. Those issues include data collected from license plate readers, police-worn body cameras, as well as Real ID and health care information. Sen. Kent says these are complex subjects to tackle, but she is committed to finding real solutions.

“People can be really passionate about these issues, and for good reason because they get at the core of how we believe our government should impact our lives. I look forward to learning about this in even greater detail, and working together to find solutions that Minnesotans can feel comfortable with,” said Sen. Kent.
