ST. PAUL, Minn.  – The Association of Metropolitan School Districts (AMSD) presented Sen. Chuck Wiger (DFL-Maplewood) with its 2015 Friend of Public Education Award on Friday. The AMSD Friend of Public Education Award is presented annually to state policymakers or citizens who demonstrate exceptional leadership, advocacy and support of public education and issues important to metropolitan school districts.

“As the chair of the Education Policy and E-12 Finance Committees, Senator Wiger was an outspoken advocate for investing critical resources in our public schools,” noted AMSD Chair Rebecca Gagnon. “His support and leadership was instrumental in securing investments in early learning programs as well as the extended time and English learner programs; all critical to closing the achievement gap.”

In addition, Sen. Wiger was a leading proponent of a major initiative to reform school facilities funding to give locally-elected school board members the tools they need to maintain safe learning environment for their students and staff.

“I am honored to receive this Friend of Public Education Award from AMSD. I take seriously the state’s commitment to providing a high-quality education for all Minnesota students. I’m very proud of our work last year to invest in early learning programs and look forward to building on those investments next session. Likewise, last session was also a big year for investments in facilities. It is my firm belief that your zip code should not dictate the quality of your learning environment,” said Sen. Wiger.

Wiger was previously selected for the AMSD Friend of Education award in 2006 and 2014.
