Executive order will help pollinators

St. Paul, Minn – Today Governor Mark Dayton issued an executive order to address the high rate of pollinator decline in Minnesota. Executive Order 16-07 is a wide-ranging effort that will help to preserve pollinators, including supporting pollinator habitat and restricting the use of certain pesticides.

While this is a good first step, more action can and should be taken by the legislature to address these issues said Senator Kari Dziedzic (DFL-Minneapolis), who has carried legislation to help address pollinator loss.

“Minnesota is a top honey producer and bees are used to pollinate several Minnesota crops. Not only is this an environmental issue, it is also an economic issue. Minnesota should lead by example in using best practices and products and in how we manage public lands in ways that support pollinator health. I want to thank Governor Dayton for his leadership. This first in the nation effort is a good start to helping preserve our pollinator population and I look forward to continuing to lead these efforts in the Senate,” said Sen. Dziedzic.

Executive Order 16-07 requires the Environmental Quality Board to create an Interagency Pollinator Protection Team and develop statewide pollinator goals. It also requires other state agencies to take immediate actions to improve pollinator health and develop long term strategies and best management practices to maintain Minnesota’s pollinator population.

Executive Order 16-07 also establishes a Governor’s Committee on Pollinator Protection to advise the Governor and state agencies on pollinator policies and programs. The Committee will include citizen members. Applications will be accepted through the Secretary of State’s open appointments process.
