Sen. Kent joins Senate DFL caucus call for a special session

ST. PAUL, Minn – Sen. Susan Kent (DFL-Woodbury) joins her Senate DFL colleagues in their call for a special session to immediately address health insurance premium increases.

Last Thursday, the Senate DFL sent a letter to Governor Mark Dayton formally requesting a special session, saying there are viable solutions that have already been developed that could offer a short-term fix to avoid people having to pay skyrocketing premiums that are set to go into effect in January. On Friday, the Governor said he’d like to see caucus leaders come to a joint agreement by Nov. 1 – the day open enrollment on the MNsure website begins.

“I believe a special session is absolutely necessary in order to quickly find a short-term solution to offset these high premium increases. These cost increases are an unfair burden on families – and it’s imperative that we as elected officials are doing everything we can to make sure health insurance costs are within reach for ALL Minnesotans.

I am supportive of the bill we already have drafted, called the Minnesota Health Insurance Premiums Tax Credit that would ensure families aren’t paying more than 9.6 percent of their annual incomes to premiums. This can serve as a stopgap while we work on more comprehensive long-term reforms during regular session,” said Sen. Kent.
