Sen. Dibble’s response to President Trump’s executive actions on immigration

St. Paul, Minn. – Following President Trump’s issuance of executive orders today seeking to limit immigration, boost border patrols, build a wall on the Mexican border, target sanctuary cities, and punish undocumented people living and working in the United States, Sen. Scott Dibble (DFL-Minneapolis) had the following statement:

“I am horrified at the injustices we’ve seen this week—first with eliminating access to affordable homeownership, undermining adequate health care for millions, attacking native people’s rights, taking steps that will worsen our environment and speed climate change, muzzling free speech rights to talk about our climate crisis, and now, the blatant racism of new immigration policies.

Boosting border patrol and building a wall on the Mexican border does nothing but further divide us from each other and our international neighbors. Deporting undocumented people living and working in the United States and requiring they be held in prison until their trial date—which can be years—is an inhumane denial of due process. Targeting sanctuary cities not only makes our neighbors already living and working here unsafe around their own police, but also imposes an enormous burden on local resources.

Part of the genius of the success our country is the constant infusion of new people who bring their energy and new ideas. It is unconscionable to deny entry into the United States members of political, religious and sexual minority groups who face extreme persecution and murder at the hands of extremists. And injury to one is an injury to all. I stand against these actions and stand up with my friends, colleagues and neighbors who continue to believe in the American dream.”
