Senator Clausen Statement on Today’s Senate Tax Committee Hearing

St. Paul, Minn. – Senator Clausen provided the following statement:

“In the 2015 and 2016 legislative sessions, I authored SF 41, which permanently exempted Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) tickets and admissions from sales tax, as well as SF 381, which extends from five to ten days the tax exemption for nonprofit fundraising booths at county fairs and community celebrations,” said Sen. Clausen. “Both had bipartisan support and would have been included in a compromise special session tax bill. This year, I was determined to continue advocating for these initiatives, so I re-introduced the bills and requested hearings.”

“I am pleased to see that these popular and worthy bipartisan bills were also introduced by my Republican colleagues. Both the MSHSL exemption and a similar nonprofit fundraising exemption bill were heard in the Senate Committee on Taxes today. They received a favorable response and were laid over for possible inclusion in an omnibus tax bill. After working hard on these provisions over the past few years, I was pleased to see there was strong bipartisan interest and support. I am most interested in seeing these bills passed into law as soon as possible and applaud my Republican colleagues for introducing similar provisions. I look forward to supporting these provisions should they be included in a final bill,” concluded Clausen.

The MSHSL ticket sales tax exemption, 2017 SF 164, allows state tournament ticket sales tax dollars to be placed in the MSHSL Foundation. Schools from across the state apply for these grant funds to support athletics, fine and performing arts activities, and to pay participation fees for students who otherwise could not participate. 2017 SF 100 is aimed at assisting 4H groups and other non-profit organizations to maximize their fundraising efforts in order to support community based initiatives.
