Sen. Klein responds to counter protesters at rally for President Trump
ST. PAUL, Minn– State Senator Matt Klein, M.D. (DFL-Mendota Heights) issued the following comments after counter protesters interrupted the rally held in the Capitol Rotunda supporting President Trump on Saturday. “The state capitol is a forum for ideas, and the peaceful supporters of President Trump who congregated there this weekend were exercising their First Amendment rights,” Sen. Klein said. “I condemn the counter protesters for disrupting the event. While I deeply oppose our President on many issues, I will always defend his supporters’ right to speak.”
“Our democracy has always been sustained by individuals who stood for the principles of the Constitution over their own political agenda; from John Adams, who defended the British soldiers in the Boston Massacre, to Senator John McCain, who has contradicted the deceptions of our current President. Democrats today are called upon to do the same. Our goal is to elevate and sustain the American experiment. And we can only do so by expressing its principles in our actions; by understanding that all of us are created equal, and we are obliged to listen as well as speak, and reach compromise where we can do so without violating our integrity,” said Sen. Klein.
