Senator Karla Bigham: My First Week at the Minnesota Senate
Hello neighbors! It is such an honor and privilege to be your new state senator.
What an amazing first week it’s been. Minnesota Supreme Court Chief Justice Lorie Skjerven Gildea presided over my swearing in ceremony, I received my committee assignments, and 3M announced an $850 million settlement that will be used to provide clean and safe water for our communities.
I appreciate your letters, emails, and phone calls – please keep them coming! As an elected official, I depend on your views and feedback to make decisions that impact our everyday lives, whether it’s providing our kids with a great education, keeping families safe in their homes and public places, or building safe, sturdy roads that get you where you need to go. My office is a place that welcomes all viewpoints and ideas. After all, our State Capitol is the PEOPLE’S HOUSE!
My office is Room 3411 in the Minnesota Senate Building, located at 95 University Avenue West in Saint Paul (across the street from the Capitol). Please stop by any time, and I would be happy to meet with you. You can also mail me letters, reach me by phone at 651-297-8060, or email me using the contact form available online at www.senate.mn/senatorbigham.
I will send weekly email newsletters to provide an overview of what’s going on at the Capitol. You can subscribe at www.senate.mn/senatorbigham. Another way you can stay up to date about legislative news that affects our area is by reading your local newspaper or tuning into your local radio station. Plans for a town hall meeting are in the works, and I will make an announcement with all the details soon.
In addition to serving the needs and addressing the concerns of people like you, a big part of my job involves serving on legislative committees that oversee specific public policy and budget areas. This session, I am a member of two committees:
1) Environment and Natural Resources Finance
This committee oversees the budget for a wide range of the state’s environment and natural resources programs and initiatives. Clean and safe water will be a big focus of mine on this committee, and my experiences visiting with many of you affected by PFCs in the east metro will inform my decision-making process on local and statewide challenges. Meetings take place in Room 1150 of the Minnesota Senate Building every Tuesday and Wednesday from 10:30 a.m.-12 p.m.
2) Veterans and Military Affairs Finance and Policy
This committee oversees the budget and public policy that supports our veterans and active military personnel, such as veterans’ homes. I am so honored to be a member of a committee whose purpose is to care for the servicemen and women who put their lives on the line and have sacrificed so much to keep our state and country safe. Meetings take place in Room 1100 of the Minnesota Senate Building every Thursday from 8:30-10:00 a.m.
Lastly, I want you to know that I will be a senator for everyone. Your voice matters to me, and I want to hear what you have to say, regardless of your political affiliation or background. Please visit or contact me if I can ever be of service.
