Senator Erik Simonson Statement on Enbridge Pipeline

St. Paul, Minn. – The Minnesota Senate on Wednesday, May 16 voted by a 35-32 margin to dismantle processes that protect Minnesota taxpayers, landowners, and natural resources from disasters and other liabilities. Senator Erik Simonson (DFL-Duluth) released the following statement in response to the near party-line vote.

“I respect the right of the Legislature to pass this bill, but I also respect thoughtful processes that were created to protect Minnesotans from unforeseen disasters involving highly combustible products like petroleum. I urge Governor Dayton to veto this short-sighted bill. To my fellow lawmakers, I caution us against going down this road. Nonpartisan regulatory agencies exist because big decisions like Enbridge’s Line 3 replacement project should be approved or denied based on science and facts, not political posturing. I’m a big believer that job creation and environmental protection is not an either/or proposition – we can absolutely do both. I support the pipeline project and the jobs it will bring, but I could not support this bill due to the fact that it circumvents regulatory processes.”
