America Must Welcome Our Fellow Human Beings in Their Time of Crisis, Says Senator John Marty

St. Paul, Minn. – Senator John Marty (DFL-Roseville) today said that President’s Trump’s policy of halting immigration from Muslim majority countries and ripping refugee children away from their parents goes against the values of our nation.

“The decision by five Supreme Court Justices to uphold President Trump’s Muslim Ban will go down in history as a mistake similar to the 1944 Korematsu decision that resulted in the forced imprisonment of American citizens of Japanese ancestry,” said Sen. Marty.

“Justice Sotomayor’s dissent rightly compared the cases, writing that the federal government at the time invoked an ill-defined national-security threat to justify an exclusionary policy of sweeping proportion. President Trump’s modifications of the policy to hide his intent did not fundamentally change either the intent or the impact of this outrageous policy. Trump’s Muslim Ban is discrimination institutionalized, plain and simple.”

“Furthermore, our immigration system treats people – many of whom are trying to protect their children from violence – in a cruel and inhumane manner. It is time to reverse these awful policies, keep families together, and provide a helping hand to those who are running in fear for their lives and looking for a better future.”

“We need to live up to our nation’s values, as spelled out in the Emma Lazarus poem at the Statue of Liberty, and welcome our fellow humans in their time of crisis:

‘Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!’”

“President Trump’s hateful words and actions against Muslims everywhere and immigrants on our southern border will not stand. Let us recreate an America that is welcoming to people of all colors, cultures, and religious beliefs.”
