Senator Erik Simonson Condemns Decision of Five Supreme Court Justices to Inflict Harm on Working Families
Five conservative members of the United States Supreme Court today issued a decision that harms Minnesotans who work for public sector unions, such as teachers, nurses, corrections officers, child care providers, paramedics, and sanitation workers. The court’s narrow 5-4 decision in the Janus vs. AFSCME lawsuit fundamentally undermines public employees’ ability to collectively advocate for fair compensation, benefits, and working conditions.
“The Supreme Court got this one wrong, plain and simple,” said Sen. Simonson in response to the court’s decision. “Let me be clear, today’s ruling serves as a victory to Republicans and their conservative dark money donors who work hard to suppress working families and the unions that support them. Make no mistake, the working men and women of northern Minnesota and throughout our country will not stay silent as the GOP chips away at their freedoms and livelihoods. Republicans and corporate lobbyists are clinking champagne glasses today, but their cheers will soon be drowned out by millions of working men and women around the country who are mobilizing in response to today’s ruling. For more than a quarter century, I proudly paid dues to the International Association of Fire Fighters while employed by the Duluth Fire Department. I stand with my brothers and sisters in Labor today, tomorrow, and always.”
