Senator Tomassoni Cheers Final DNR Approval of PolyMet Permits
Senator David Tomassoni (DFL-Chisholm) today is celebrating a decision by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to issue permits for Poly Met Mining, Inc.’s (PolyMet’s) proposed NorthMet mining project in northeast Minnesota located near the cities of Hoyt Lakes and Babbitt.
In response to the DNR’s decision, Senator David Tomassoni (DFL-Chisholm) – who represents Hoyt Lakes – released the following statement.
“Northeastern Minnesota is rich in natural resources. We’ve safely mined this region for over 135 years. It’s our heritage and it’s who we are. Today’s decision by the DNR to issue permits for the PolyMet project means that northeastern Minnesota will continue our proud tradition of putting people to work by safely excavating natural resources that are used to drive prosperity, growth and innovation all over the world. I’m very pleased for the Iron Range and the countless individuals who will have new opportunities to provide for themselves and their families as a result of this project.
My thanks to the DNR and all the associated agencies and consultants for their all-encompassing work on this project. Fourteen years of studies and analysis and the most comprehensive permit to mine ever issued is a testament to the validity of this project. I look forward to the MPCA and Army Corps of Engineers’ issuance of the final permits so we can get on with the business of the next generation of mining, great-paying jobs, and renewed vitality in the area. These minerals are needed badly in our new age economy and they will be provided by Minnesota’s mining industry. This is truly a great, long awaited day.”
