Veterans Committee honors World War I Veterans, corrects history

The Senate Veterans Committee heard a bill this week that would place a memorial plaque in the Court of Honor on the State Capitol grounds. It would replace the plaque that is currently there that incorrectly accounts for the number of Minnesota veterans that served in           World War I.

The current plaque only accounts for Minnesotans that served abroad during World War I – 57,413 veterans in all. However, 118,497 Minnesotan veterans served in World War I both at home and abroad.

Under the bill, the Capitol Area Architectural and Planning Board will solicit and decide on a design for the plaque that honors all 118,497 of Minnesota’s World War I veterans.

The bill was recommended to pass and will be heard next on the floor. (SF 160)
