SAINT PAUL, Minn. — Senate DFL Leader Tom Bakk, DFL-Cook, responded to the Senate Republican tax bill with the following statement.
“The Senate Republican tax bill is just a swing and a miss. There’s nothing in there for the Working Family Credit or child care assistance and the school voucher language hurts our public schools. Minnesota Republicans even go so far as objecting to the completely reasonable idea of asking corporations with foreign operating income to pay their fair share. The governor, the Minnesota House, and even President Trump and Congress are on the same page with that, but somehow Minnesota Senate Republicans disagree.
“After all that’s wrong with this bill, the most glaringly missing piece is the complete lack of support for cities and counties, which means Minnesotans across the state will see property tax increases. I offered an amendment to get us close to the 2002 levels of local government aid and county program aid – back before the Pawlenty reductions – but every single Senate Republican voted against it. We had a real opportunity today to make a difference to cities and counties across the state, and it’s disheartening to see Republicans reject our efforts.”
