Clausen offers legislation to invest in the Minnesota Zoo

Senator Greg Clausen (DFL-Apple Valley) introduced legislation that would improve infrastructure and exhibit renewal at the Minnesota Zoo. Senator Clausen made his case for the legislation on Thursday in the Senate Environment, Economic Development and Agriculture Committee.
“This year the Minnesota Zoo is celebrating 35 years of connecting people, animals and the natural world while contributing to the Minnesota quality of life,” said Sen. Clausen. “Beyond the cultural contribution to our state, the Minnesota Zoo is an economic engine that adds 1,738 jobs and $79 million in value to the 7-county metropolitan area.”
The funding in Sen. Clausen’s legislation will go towards three projects. The first project is to complete renovations in the 16 year-old Discovery Bay exhibit. Once completed, the Zoo will be able to accept a group of Hawaiian monk seals, the most endangered seal in U.S. waters with only 1,100 left in the wild.
The second project will improve one of the Zoo’s most visible exhibits. The 35 year-old Snow Monkey Exhibit Project will improve behind the scenes animal care areas and greatly improve guests’ initial experience upon entering the facility.
The third project will address infrastructure problems ranging from dangerously cracked sidewalks, to needs for mechanical system improvements.
“Each year, over 1.4 million people visit the zoo to enjoy the exhibits and learn something along the way,” said Sen. Clausen. “With the zoo increasing our quality of life and giving great returns on investment, I hope we can include this language in our next bonding bill.”
Traditionally bonding bills are passed in even numbered years, but there has been some talk of passing a bill this year. If you would like to contact Senator Clausen on his Minnesota Zoo legislation, or any other legislative concerns, he can be reached at 651-296-4120 or via email at
