Senator David J. Tomassoni represents District 5, which includes a significant chunk of the Iron Range in northeastern Minnesota. First elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives in 1992, Tomassoni served four terms there before running and winning a Senate seat in 2000.
He currently serves on the Agriculture, Rural Development, and Housing Policy Committee, Capital Investment Committee, and is the ranking member of the Environment and Natural Resources Finance Committee. Tomassoni is a current member of the Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation Board (IRRRB), Legislative-Citizens Commission on Minnesota Resources (LCCMR), Lessard-Sams Outdoor Heritage Council (LSOHC), International Legislators Forum, and the Minnesota Sports Facilities Commission.
A graduate of Chisholm High School, Tomassoni got his business administration degree from the University of Denver, where he played varsity hockey, winning two WCHA Championships and made it to the Frozen Four twice. After college, he played professional hockey in Italy for 16 years and skated for Team Italy in the 1980 and 1984 Winter Olympic Games. He returned to Minnesota in 1990 and has an insurance office in his hometown.
With his wife, Charlotte, Tomassoni lives in Chisholm. They have three grown children and five grandchildren.
