St. Paul, Minn. – Improvements to safety, traffic flow, and access to Trunk Highway 316 would be funded thanks to legislation introduced by Senator Karla Bigham (DFL-Cottage Grove) this week. The legislation would provide $2,550,000 in new funding to address these infrastructure improvements.
“Since 2017 MnDOT and the City of Hastings have been working to make these necessary improvements to this road, and this legislation will ensure that these improvements are prioritized and completed,” said Senator Bigham. “I want to thank the City of Hastings for their collaborative approach in getting this done. This funding is critical to making sure we are addressing the full scope of issues that we need to – let’s not put this off.”
The area of Trunk Highway 316 that would be improved by this funding would be between its northerly junction with US Highway 61 to just south of Tuttle Drive at the southern city limits of Hastings.
Improvements would include:
- Three new compact roundabouts that will improve access to and from local streets and calm traffic, enhancing safety along the corridor.
- Extensions of trails alongside TH 316 to provide a separated facility for pedestrian and bicycle users.
- Safe pedestrian crossing facilities to connect these users between places of recreation, commerce, and residence.
- An urban design with a center median to aid in traffic calming, with access closures to minimize risky left turn activity, thereby improving safety and mobility along the corridor.
