St. Paul, Minn.—Senate Republicans revealed a short-term transportation plan today. Sen. Susan Kent (DFL-Woodbury) provided an immediate response to the underwhelming plan, and has released the following statement.
“This is an underdeveloped plan that falls short of what Minnesota’s true transportation needs are. A portion of funding that would normally be spent to improve our schools and support our seniors will now go toward transportation. This is a short-term solution that won’t keep up with the needs throughout Minnesota. “
“Minnesota needs a comprehensive, long term plan and funding that balances the needs of all regions of the state; this includes transit options and requires reliable, meaningful investment. While $400 million is a great deal of money, in the face of the our long-underfunded transportation needs, it is a drop in the bucket.”
“I have serious concerns about the reliability of this funding, should our economy falter. It will be all too easy to redirect general fund dollars from transportation to other priorities if our economy tightens or if Minnesota faces a budget deficit.”
