On the last day of the 2011 session, the Senate took up the Legacy Funds bill. This bill allocates the money collected from the constitutional amendment dedicated sales tax passed by voters in 2008.
“There’s a lot here for Duluthians to be excited about,” notes Senator Roger Reinert. “I’m pleased we were able to secure $1.5 million over the next two years for cleanup efforts of the St. Louis River and Duluth Harbor.” These funds will be administered by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency.
“We also have $200,000 going to the Lake Superior Zoo,” he noted. “This funding validates the hard work the Zoo has been doing to become re-accredited.”
An additional $1 million from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund is set aside for competitive grants for regional children’s museums. “Our children’s museum has a ton of wonderful programs. I am confident their grant applications will be successful in this new competitive grant structure.” Other communities with children’s museums competing for those funds are Grand Rapids and Mankato.
