Long Term Care Initiative Unveiled

On Thursday, members of the Senate and House unveiled legislation that would improve the way the state funds our nursing homes. Minnesota’s nursing facility payment system has not seen major innovation since the 1990’s; this proposal would instate a new funding system that better represents the actual cost of care. As a result of these realigned payments, rural facilities may be able to retain employees more effectively, as staff often move to metro and regional centers in search of higher wages under the current system. Minnesota’s senior population is booming, with roughly 60,000 people turning 65 this year. This legislation is one of several proposals that will be introduced this year to help prepare our system for growing population. (S.F. 273)
