Senator Jim Carlson

Jim Carlson was first elected to the Minnesota State Senate in 2006 to represent Senate District 51, which includes Eagan and Burnsville. He is currently in his second term.

Carlson earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Minnesota and worked in manufacturing management positions at Ecolab and 3M. He has extensive business experience, including budgeting, negotiating, and strategic planning.

In addition to his work-related experience, Sen. Carlson is involved in a variety of community activities. He helped to form the local District 196 Support Group of the Gifted and Talented and has also participated in 3M community outreach programs, visiting local schools with the 3M Visiting Wizards and 3M TECH programs.

Outside of the Capitol, Carlson is a bike rider, woodworker, classic sports car buff, videographer, and gourmet cook. He and his wife, Gayle, have two children and live in Eagan.

    We are now in Day 3 of a Special Session that was supposed to end, by written agreement between leadership and Governor Dayton, at 7am yesterday. Poor (or no) communication, time mismanagement, and total lack of concern for the pressure put on nonpartisan staff have all characterized the Republican leadership this session. We are hearing there's a chance we can finish soon, and I hope that is true, but there have been many poor decisions made and terrible changes made to law this year. Minnesotans deserve better than the 2017 Legislative session. Stay tuned and keep watching as we work towards the finish line. ...
