Our trip to Germany showed us, I think, what Minnesota's renewable energy efforts might look like in the near future (literally - when you see a 600 foot tall wind turbine, you tend to remember it!) These folks are quite serious about the energy transition they have implemented, and the results are impressive. We've seen and heard a lot, and in the last few days toured an aluminum smelting plant, reviewed transportation initiatives, saw a part of the Hamburg city planning developments featuring low energy use buildings along the Elbe river canal, and heard from many excellent speakers. We were glad to be invited to a dinner at the Forign Affairs office in Berlin where I was glad to meet some of the members of the German parliament who serve in the Bundestag. The issues faced here include legislative target setting, auctions that allow customers to buy electricity from any of the hundreds of options, paying for grid expnsion, and simply figuring out how to provide reliable, low cost energy to all. It's been a fantastic trip and I'm grateful to our hosts and sponsors. See you in MN soon.
