Minnesota lawmakers fight cancer with landmark study

Senator Kathy Sheran
State Senator Kathy Sheran announced today that Minnesota lawmakers and staff, from both sides of the aisle, rolled up their sleeves to fight cancer by enrolling in the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3).
“Once again Minnesota is leading the nation with a study that has the potential to change the face of cancer. This study will help determine causes of cancer and other diseases and hopefully help us find ways to prevent it,” Sen. Sheran said.

Sen. Sheran, who is a member of the legislature’s Cancer Caucus, was instrumental is recruiting participation of both legislators and staff. The caucus hoped to enroll 250 participants in this long-term study.
“By enrolling, participants agreed to complete follow-up surveys over the next 20 years,” she said. “The initial survey only took 20 minutes to complete. This costs nothing but a few minutes; I like to think of it as a gift to our children and our grandchildren.”

Previous cancer prevention studies from the American Cancer Society have been instrumental in helping identify some of the major factors that can affect cancer risks, including the link between cigarette smoking and cancer, as well as environmental risks for cancer. CPS-3 holds the best hope of identifying new and emerging cancer risks and can help researchers better understand the genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors that cause or prevent cancer, which will ultimately save lives.

“I’m proud to have been able to help kick off this important study that will help researchers build on evidence from previous studies, and bring us closer to eliminating cancer as a major health burden for this and future generations,” said Sheran. “I’m also proud that so many of my legislative colleagues and staff were willing to give their time during a busy part of the legislative session. We will all benefit from their commitment to this endeavor.”

A wide range of Minnesota state employees are joining the fight against cancer including employees of the Minnesota Judicial Branch, Minnesota Department of Transportation, Minnesota Department of Agriculture, Minnesota Department of Administration, Minnesota Association of Professional Employees and Minnesota Government Relations Council.
