Minnesota sees spike in discrimination, hate crimes

Asian and Pacific Islander Minnesotans are experiencing an increase in discrimination and hate crimes during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Governor Walz has spoken out on the issue, stating that “viruses don’t discriminate, and neither should we”. He has said that the state encourages anyone who experiences discrimination to report it. Senate DFLers are also looking at several ways to combat this increase in discrimination and hate crimes and encourage all Minnesotans to condemn this behavior.

If you or someone you know believes you have been discriminated against because of COVID-19, please report it to the Minnesota Department of Human rights by calling (651) 539-1133 or 1 (800) 657-3704. Victims of hate crimes should contact the police.

The Department of Human Rights has released a newsletter with more resources on fighting discrimination that can be found here.
